IBM reporting that NZ is the 2nd biggest source of internet security attacks is just plain *weird*!
Lets face it, NZ's modest on-line population, crippled by high connection costs, and most of 'em still on dial-up being responsible for 1.2 million attacks ... in whose reality!
Compare that to the size of the on-line population in just about *any* other country.
"Suspicious activity was traced" being the only clue to what they are talking about, but if the record for stuff that bounces off our NZ-based firewall is to be any guide, Taiwan and Korea are way up there, even above the US.
If they were talking about penetrations, or successful exploits, I am sure that we would be away of an active hacking underground, so I'm picking they are merely refering to probes and scans being traced.
Perhaps IBM considers that it is inappropriate for them to point the finger at political and economic "allies" such as Australia, Singapore, Korea and Taiwan, but it's OK to blame those anti-nuclear peaceniks in the South Pacific.

Well done Telecom

Yeah, Strange title, but I was quite taken by their wee gesture of generosity.
In their latest "In Touch" blurb included with my telephone invoice was an article saying they would credit all calls to the UK from resdential lines for a couple of days after the London Bombings.
Probably not a big cost to them, but a very considerate & human gesture.
... so, well done Telecom.

It's been a while

It's been a while since the last posting on here.
Reason being: I injured my back, and have been basically out of action.
While I have been recuperating, I have not been particularly interested in much at all, let alone surfing the interweb or musing on a blog.
It has meant that i have not been able to do anything except walk around (and around and around ...) the house, or the local suburbs. I cannot take a car trip (can't sit down) or concentrate on much at all, just get tired and grumpy.
This week, I finally started reading a book, but progress is slow.
Of course it has also meant that I have become a "client" of the ACC system.
So far, it has been relatively painless, but it seems that after a month, you become "long-term" and things may become interesting as they want to get me back to work & off their books.
At least I can now do short stints at the screen & catch up with the cyber-world ... (all those e-mails!)
